The School Of Good And Evil Ending Explained: Did The Dying Sophie Bring The Peace?

The School for Good and Evil based on the book of Soman Chainani is the newly released Netflix movie. It was directed by Paul Feig. This fantasy movie was based on the best-selling drama fantasy book of the same name. Thy hype it created was very real but the film was rather disappointing. The movie itself was very fast-paced but the characters were not developed, the lack of self-development was not only seen in the main characters but also in the side characters which were portrayed in very depth in the book. The age-old book comparison can continue, but let's not dwell on that for now and move to the juicy part.

Spoilers Ahead!!!

Movie Plot:

The School of Good and Evil was founded by two identical brothers given each the powers of Good and Evil. The two brothers Rafal the creator of the Evil School and Rhian the Good School, were meant to maintain the balance and harmony of the universe with their powers. But the Evil Rafal had other plans, bored and anguished from only taking half of everything decided to challenge Rhian. The battle between them was one-sided as the good can only defend. Rhian and Rafal during battle lead to a cliff on which both of them fall but we see a hand that leads to the survival of Rhian.
On the other hand, there is Sophie and Agatha live far away in the small town of Gavaldon. Their lives were normal, to say the least. Sophie who is a big dreamer of being a princess lives in a house full of chaos where she was ridiculed. While Agatha who lives alone with her mother is just happy being with her, her mother does not possess any talent but believes that her daughter would make a wonderful witch. Agatha was hated by her entire village and the only comfort and warmth she felt and the only person who stood up for her was her best friend. The story of how their relationship flourished was also shown, where they bonded when Agatha gave her a twig crown on the grave of Sophie's mother. Sophie was grieving as her mother believed in her dream and told her that she was meant to do something that is going to change the world. From then on they were inseparable.
In Gavaldon, these two best friends loved to read and in search of their fantasy went to the library, both of them, even though were readers had very different tastes, Sophie was more of a cinderella girl while Agatha was an apocalyptic lover. While searching for the next reads Sophie found a book and that's when the librarian Mrs. Deauville told them about the school of the Good and Evil when Sophie found the original seal in one of her selections. The big dreamer she is; wrote a letter to the school in hopes of admission. Sophie soon realizes that the letter was not going to get answered and she has to take matters into her own hands and decided to leave Gavaldon. Agatha found out about her leaving and begged her to stay. Sophie promised her but was ready to leave and break the promise. On her way out at night Sophie was met by Agatha who was heartbroken by the betrayal of her only friend.  Amidst the argument, they saw a shadowy creature lurking in the background with glowy red eyes. The creature took Sophie and rushed in a direction, adamant about saving Sophie who was happy that her wish was answered, Agatha grabbed her friend and didn't let go. Eventually, the creature dropped them and Agatha was relieved and told that she is not risking the danger to her but a bird appeared from behind and clasped them in its paws taking them to the land of the fairytales.

Adventure in The School Of Good And Evil
Sophie and Agatha began their journey to the school and saw the castle clearly picturing the identity of the school. The bird dropped Sophie in the castle of Evil and Agatha in the castle of Good. Sophie couldn't believe that she was evil and thought that it was a mere mistake. On the hand, Agatha was still holding on to the fact they shouldn't be here at all.
Sophie fully creeped out by the evil, learned that they were both lucky readers chosen to attend the school and everyone else except her and Agatha was the kin of famous villains and heroes.
Their main goal was to convince the school head Rhian that their placement was in the wrong schools. Rhian gave them a chance and told them if Sophie is actually good, she will find her true love's kiss from the school of good. Agatha on the other saw the spirit of Rafal right after she eavesdropped on the conversation between Lady Lesso and Clarissa. Rafal's spirit told Agatha to not distract Sophie from fulfilling her destiny.

True Love Kiss

The idea of the true love kiss was to prove that Sophie was in fact in the wrong school. Agatha met a young man and believed that this could be the key. Sophie proved her wrong and told her that she is interested in Tedros the son of King Arthur. King Arthur was smitten by the beauty of her bride and got betrayed so Tedros wanted to see beyond the beauty and wanted someone who was in fact good in her heart. Sophie was a never and she couldn't shoot an arrow but with the help of Agatha, she did actually throw it and then their relationship blossomed. Sophie was beautiful, confident, and good-hearted so Tedros asked the school head that they should be placed together since they are in love and this proves that Sophie belongs to the Good School.

A Trial by Tale

After hearing the testimonies of Tedros and Sophie Rhian told them to complete the challenge of Trial by tale where they were placed in other parts of the Blue forest and had to fight off evil and come back alive. While in the challenge they can't take help from anyone and if they came out alive only then they can prove their love to be true. However as Agatha was helping Sophie throughout their relationship, she helped Sophie in this one too. The Pumpkin Reaper was out for them and even though they did find each other Tedros was overpowered by Pumpkin Reaper. Tedros didn't have his sword and called out for the help of Sophie who hid behind the tree. Sophie did not give him the sword but Agatha was unable to stand the sight of Tedros being hurt and took action ultimately killing Pumpkin Reaper. This led to the end of the challenge since the rule was violated and Tedros saw the real face of Sophie and fall out of love. Sophie on the other hand turned against Agatha and left her.

Evil Sophie

After the turn of events in the challenge, Sophie met the spirit of Rafal who convinced Sophie that her friend is not actually her friend and believes that Sophie is evil. Sophie fully embraced her evil self and agreed to the blood magic of Rafal. On the other hand, Agatha told the whole school that Rafal is back and is haunting Sophie with evil intentions. Sophie, mesmerized by the greed for power, started unleashing chaos. Lady Lesso believing that Rafal is in love with her couldn't see that Rafal would destroy everything in his path and will keep all the power to himself. While discussing this Sophie appeared and turned them into dolls with her blood magic, which was very powerful. After she started using blood magic. Sophie turned into an old woman slowly progressing into an uglier and uglier version of it. Sophie, is determined to destroy Agatha considering her as her archenemy and they can not coexist. Tedros, enraged and to save Agatha and the good school attacked the evil school ensuing a fight between them. Sophie told that good defends and evil attacks and since they attacked now they are evil.
The declaration that they are evil Sophie returned to her beautiful self once again. Sophie handled Agatha and then went to destroy Rhian.

Ending

As the climax unfolds, it turned out that Rhian was actually Rafal, that day when Rhian and Rafal fell down the cliff. Rhian made it to the top but Rafal jumped up and killed Rhian. For 200 years Rafal destroyed the good from within. It felt like that good was winning but it was all superficial. Agatha was also annoyed by the fact that it was only perfectionism and no empathy. Rafal convinced Sophie that they are true love and should rule all the fairytale land shared a kiss. Right after kissing Rafal the world started to destroy and Sophie realizes that Rafal used her to unlock her powers and worried about the friends that were left behind and started panicking. While Sophie was regretting her decisions, Agatha came to the rescue and confronted Rafal. Rafal threw storian towards Agatha but Sophie came in front and got stabbed instead.  With her, the evil unlocked by Rafal also fell apart and Sophie died in the arms of Agatha. Agatha kissed her and break the spell of true love since Sophie performed the pure act of goodness. Rafal prepared to kill Tedros when Agatha and Sophie attacked him with the sword destroying Rafal and restoring the land of the fairytale.

In the end, we see that Agatha and Sophie left for Gavaldon leaving Tedros. They were able to keep the magic they unlocked in the school indicating the end, but Tedros had opened the vortex between Gavaldon and the fairytale. Right after the arrow of Tedros hit the tree, a dagger pierced the arrow indicating that this fact is not an ending and the evil will linger on best friends.

This ending indicates that we are in for a sequel and will be able to see another adventure of Sophie and Agatha. We hope that the sequel also addresses the side characters and gives the characters much-needed depth.
