Michael J. Fox received an honorary Oscar on Saturday for his efforts to raise money for Parkinson's research of $1.5 billion after being identified as having the condition during the height of his acting career. At a black-tie ceremony in Los Angeles attended by Hollywood's biggest stars, Fox was presented with the yearly trophy from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for humanitarian service by a member of the film business.

At the age of 29, the Back to the Future actor received a diagnosis of a neurological condition that causes tremors and other symptoms. Despite continuing to act in movies and TV shows like Spin City, The Good Wife, Stuart Little, and Atlantis: The Lost Empire, after his initial diagnosis, Fox eventually made the decision to leave the business and established The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research to support the effort to find a cure.

The on-stage introduction of Fox by actor Woody Harrelson described him as "a masterclass in humor" with an "invincible superhuman quality." ". He added that Fox had "transformed a terrifying diagnosis into a valiant mission." Humanitarian Award from the board of governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization that bestows the Academy Awards. However, Fox claimed that after disclosing his illness, the response from fans and the encouragement from his colleagues in the entertainment industry were "transformative."

The actor was very overwhelmed, he said, "You´re making me shake, stop it," while the star-studded crowd gave him a standing ovation. "It is humbling in the deepest way to stand here and accept your kindness," the humbleness was illuminating in the speech of Fox. "I didn't know if an audience could laugh if they knew I was struggling". Fox shared, it was a struggle that many suffer when one is diagnosed with this kind of rare disease.
