Pablo Milanés Died at age 79




79-year-old Pablo Milanés, the Latin Grammy-winning balladeer who helped found Cuba's "Nueva Trova" movement died in Spain after a battle with blood cancer. 

Pablo toured the world as a cultural ambassador for Fidel Castro's revolution,His passing was announced in a statement by Milanés' agents stating that he died early on Tuesday in Madrid. One of the most celebrated singer-songwriters from Cuba, he produced numerous albums and hit songs including "Yolanda," "Yo Me Quedo" (I'm Staying), and "Amo Esta Isla" (I Love This Island) during the course of a more than 50-year career.

Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz tweeted. “The culture in Cuba is in mourning for the death of Pablo Milanes,”. The passing of Milanés was indeed a big loss to the culture as the Grammy holder his songs crossed many borders and tore many hearts.

Early Career:

The youngest of five children born to working-class parents, Pablo Milanés was born on February 24, 1943, in the city of Bayamo, in what was then the province of Oriente. He began his musical career by participating in and frequently winning regional TV and radio singing competitions. He briefly attended the Havana Musical Conservatory after his family relocated there in the 1950s, He was a member of many bands in the early 1960s, including Cuarteto del Rey (the King's Quartet), and wrote his debut song, "Tu Mi Desengano,"), in 1963.In 1973, Milanés released "Versos Sencillos," a collection of songs based on poems of José Mart, a hero of Cuban independence. Another song, "Song for Latin American Unity," which praised Castro as the successor of Martin Luther King Jr. and South American liberation hero Simon Bolivar and portrayed the Cuban Revolution as a role model for other countries, ended up serving as a sort of rallying cry for the political left of the Americas. When Castro resigned as president in 2006 owing to a serious illness, Milanés joined other well-known intellectuals and artists in expressing their support for the ruling party.

Music Career:

 Pablo received multiple awards, including the Haydee Santamaria Medal from the Casa de las Americas in 2007 for his contributions to Latin American culture, the Alejo Carpentier Medal in 1982, the National Music Prize in 2005, and the Alejo Carpentier Medal in 1982.

But this was not just limited to native awards as Milanés won two Latin Grammys in 2006 for his albums "AM/PM, Lineas Paralelas" (AM/PM, Parallel lines), a duet with Puerto Rican salsa singer Andy Montanez, and "Como un Campo de Maiz" (Like a Cornfield), which won best singer-songwriter album.

Cause Of Death:

Pablo lost his battle with cancer on 22 November 2022 and was reportedly admitted to the hospital later this year. The condolences for the whole music culture are due with such a great loss.
